Lillet Rouge has been made by Maison Lillet in Podensac, south of Bordeaux, since 1962, when the house created a red version with the American market in mind. Lillet itself dates to 1872 and is owned by Pernod Ricard.
It is built on Bordeaux red wine blended with fruit liqueurs, with dark berries and cherry, a little spice and soft tannin, with clear sweetness.
If you want a red aperitif to sip on ice, Lillet Rouge is softer and fruitier than a sweet vermouth; for something drier and more bitter, choose Byrrh. For the classic white version, see Lillet Blanc.
Serve it well chilled over ice with an orange slice, or top it with sparkling wine for a red spritz. The Beverage Testing Institute suggests it for a Kir Royale.
Keep it in the fridge after opening and finish it within a few weeks. More bottles are under vermouth and aperitif, and the rest of our liquor is a click away. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery across NYC.
