Martin Ray Winery is owned by Courtney Benham, who bought the Martin Ray brand and has made wine under it since 1990. The original Martin Ray made varietal wines from 1943 to 1972. The winery has been in the Russian River Valley since 2003, with Courtney Benham, Lindsey Haughton and Bill Batchelor making the wines.
This Pinot Noir comes from sustainably farmed vineyards across the Sonoma Coast AVA and is aged in French oak. It's sealed with a screw cap and is 13.8% alcohol.
The winemaker notes describe tart red raspberry and cherry, darker brambly berries, savory coastal notes of bay leaf, sage and a hint of smoked bacon, and a dense palate with firm tannins and a long, structured finish.
Against La Crema Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast, Martin Ray costs less and carries a vintage date; for a vintage-dated Sonoma Coast Pinot under $20, choose Martin Ray.
The retailer WineAccess suggests serving it at 60°F and drinking it now through 2034. Pair it with roast chicken, grilled salmon or mushroom risotto.
