Sur de los Andes was founded in 2005 by Guillermo Banfi in Las Compuertas, Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza. The wines are made by Pablo Durigutti and Tomás Milordo, and this Pinot Noir belongs to the winery's Reserva line.
The 2022 tech sheet sources the fruit from Los Árboles in the Uco Valley, on clay-loam and sandy-stony soils, hand-harvested into crates at 7 tons per hectare. It's 100% Pinot Noir, fermented with indigenous yeasts after a 5-day cold maceration, with 100% malolactic in barrel. Half the wine spends 6 months in French and American oak barrels of 225 to 500 liters.
The producer describes brick-red color, strawberry, raspberry and cherry with light spice, soft, silky tannins and elegant, persistent acidity. The importer quotes James Suckling's description of a juicy red with strawberries, plums, balsamic and oranges.
Against Erath Oregon Pinot Noir 2022, Sur de los Andes costs $4 less and comes from high Uco Valley vineyards; for value, choose Sur de los Andes.
Serve it slightly cool with grilled salmon, roast chicken, empanadas or mushroom pasta.
