Masi Serego Alighieri Vaio Armaron Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG 2011 1.5L

In 1353, Dante's son Pietro Alighieri bought the Casal dei Ronchi estate at Gargagnago in Valpolicella. The Counts Serego Alighieri, Dante's direct descendants, still own it after about 20 generations. Masi produces the wines in partnership with the family.

Vaio Armaron comes from the estate's vineyard of the same name in Valpolicella Classica. The grapes are Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara, the Serego Alighieri clone. They dry on bamboo racks for at least 100 days, and the wine spends four to six months in traditional cherry-wood casks. Masi and Falstaff list it at 15.5% alcohol.

Masi describes an opaque ruby color, aromas of fruit preserved in spirit, dried plums and cocoa, and silky tannins with a long finish of ripe cherries and sweet spices.

Against Tommasi Amarone Classico 2021, the Vaio Armaron is a single-vineyard, cherry-cask-aged Amarone; for a magnum to share at a big dinner, choose the Vaio Armaron.

Masi gives it 25 to 30 years of cellaring potential and suggests serving it at 18°C with truffled beef, aged Parmigiano or dark chocolate.
