Mr Black Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur 750ml

The label on Mr Black says "not so sweet," and that is the whole idea. Distiller Philip Moore and designer Tom Baker started it in 2013, roasting specialty-grade arabica at their own coffee roastery and distillery just north of Sydney, cold-brewing it and fortifying it with Australian wheat vodka. The brand says it uses ten times the coffee and half the sugar of the old-style liqueurs.

In the glass it is close to black, and it drinks like strong cold brew: espresso and roasted beans, a little cocoa, then a dry, slightly bitter finish. It is 25% alcohol.

Buy it for an Espresso Martini that tastes of coffee: equal parts Mr Black, vodka and fresh espresso, a little simple syrup, shaken hard. If you like your White Russians sweet and creamy, Kahlúa is still the better fit.

On its own, pour it neat over one big cube.
