Patriarche Père & Fils is a négociant house in Beaune, founded by Jean-Baptiste Patriarche in 1780. Its vaulted cellars run about 5 kilometers beneath the town and hold some 2 million bottles. The Castel group announced its purchase of Patriarche in 2011.
Nuits-Saint-Georges is an appellation in the Côte de Nuits, the northern half of Burgundy's Côte d'Or. The wine is 100% Pinot Noir at 13% alcohol, sealed with a cork, and the 2015 has now had about a decade in bottle.
Patriarche's UK distributor describes the house's Nuits-Saint-Georges as ruby red with purple hints, with ripe red fruit and woody notes, well structured and elegant, with a long finish.
Against Louis Latour Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2023, the Patriarche comes from a named Côte de Nuits appellation and has years of bottle age; for a mature Burgundy for a special dinner, choose the Patriarche.
For its Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru, Patriarche recommends decanting and suggests boeuf bourguignon, beef cheek daube or civet de lapin, a rabbit stew; the same dishes suit this bottle. Open it an hour ahead.
