Wairau River belongs to the Rose family. Phil and Chris Rose planted some of the first vineyards in Marlborough in 1978, on the north side of the Wairau Valley. The wines are estate-grown and sustainably farmed.
This is the estate Pinot Noir, made only from the family's own Marlborough vineyards. The winery hasn't published a technical sheet for the 2022. For recent vintages it lists estate blocks including Home Block, Mahers, Crusher, Kaituna and Angler, aging in French oak barriques and full malolactic fermentation.
The winery describes concentrated raspberry and red cherry, savory complexity, wild berry and bramble, and fine tannins.
Against Craggy Range Martinborough Pinot Noir 2024, Wairau River is the Marlborough choice and costs less; for an estate New Zealand Pinot Noir around $20, choose Wairau River.
The winery suggests serving it at 15°C and pairing it with mushroom risotto, salmon or duck. It says the wine can be cellared for three to six years, so the 2022 can be opened now or kept a few more years.
