1800 is made by the Jose Cuervo family company at its La Rojeña distillery in the town of Tequila (NOM 1122). The name nods to the year tequila was first aged in oak. The agave is cooked, double distilled and bottled in the brand's tall, pyramid-shaped bottle.
Expect fruit, black pepper and fresh agave on the nose, then a smooth, medium-bodied palate with a clean, peppery finish. Wine Enthusiast (Kara Newman) gives it 91 points, calling it surprisingly floral and delicate, with vanilla and white pepper: margarita material.
It is a step up from mixto tequilas at a mid-range price, and one of the most popular margarita tequilas in the US.
