Ancho Reyes comes from Puebla, Mexico, and is made from ancho chiles, the dried form of the poblano. It is bottled at 40%, and despite the chile it is modest on heat; the pepper shows up as warmth and depth rather than a sharp burn on the tongue.
It is caramel-brown, with root-beer herbs on the nose, then caramel, cocoa, raisin and cinnamon heat on the palate and a faint smoke at the end.
For a spicy Margarita without muddling peppers, this is the bottle. It also shines in whiskey drinks: a quarter-ounce in an Old Fashioned with bourbon adds a savory, chocolatey warmth.
Ancho Reyes' own recipes include a Spicy Mexican Mule, an Ancho Old Fashioned and a Daiquiri with rum. It is also good neat, with an orange slice.
