Angostura 1919 is named for a story, not an age. After a fire at Trinidad's Government Rum Bond in 1932, master blender J.B. Fernandes found casks filled in 1919 that had come through especially well and blended from them; today's rum recreates that style. It is a molasses rum from Angostura's column stills in Laventille, Trinidad, aged in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at 40%. Newer labels call it Grand Reserve 1919.
It is smooth and bright, with vanilla, dried tropical fruit, cocoa and light oak, and a peppery finish.
1919 is the easy-drinking pick in the Angostura range: softer than Angostura 1824 and richer than Angostura 7 Year.
The producer suggests it in an Old Fashioned, or simply with coconut water over ice. It is also good neat.
More rums from Trinidad and the Caribbean are under rum. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery in Brooklyn, Manhattan & Queens.
