Solaia comes from Marchesi Antinori and is named for its vineyard: 20 southwest-facing hectares on the Tignanello estate in the Chianti Classico zone, at 350 to 400 meters on alberese and galestro soils. The first vintage was 1978, and it's made only in top years.
It's Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese; Antinori doesn't publish the 2020 percentages. The grapes are destemmed, hand-sorted and gravity-fed into 60-hectoliter conical tanks, with malolactic in barriques. The 2020 spent about 18 months in new French oak, each lot aged separately, then blended and returned to barrel. The producer describes a hot summer without extreme spikes.
Antinori describes blueberry, raspberry, currant, plum and black cherry with mint, licorice, lavender, cocoa, clove and pink pepper, a rich, mouth-filling palate with velvety tannins, and a mint, licorice and chocolate finish.
Against Ornellaia 2016, Solaia is a single vineyard with Sangiovese in the blend; for a Super Tuscan to lay down, choose Solaia.
James Suckling suggests it's best after 2028, and Wine Spectator gives 2026 to 2045. Serve with roast lamb.
