Astica is a line from Trapiche, one of Argentina's oldest wineries. Trapiche was founded in 1883 and is based in Maipú, Mendoza. It farms about 3,000 acres of its own vineyards and also buys grapes from around 300 independent growers.
Astica is Trapiche's budget Malbec, made as a straightforward, fruit-led red for everyday drinking. It's bottled at a moderate 12.5% alcohol, so it stays light on its feet with food.
Cask Cartel describes it as medium-bodied and pure, fruit driven, with juicy berry flavors and soft tannins.
Against Amalaya Malbec 2023, Astica costs about five dollars less; for an easygoing everyday Malbec under $10, choose Astica.
Serve it slightly cool, around 16°C, with burgers, empanadas, grilled sausages, pizza or a weeknight steak. It's a practical choice for parties and barbecues. Drink it young, while the fruit is fresh.
