Zorzal Eggo Tinto de Tiza Malbec 2021 is a dry red wine from Gualtallary in the Tupungato area of Argentina's Uco Valley, Mendoza, made from 100% Malbec and bottled at 14.4% alcohol in a 750ml bottle.
Zorzal is run by the Michelini brothers, with Juan Pablo Michelini as winemaker. "Tiza" means chalk, and the grapes come from a single vineyard planted in 2008 on chalky soils high in Gualtallary, farmed with organic practices. The wine is fermented with native yeasts in concrete eggs and aged 9 to 12 months in the same eggs, with no oak, then bottled unfiltered.
James Suckling notes toasty aromas of cured meat, dark olives and blackberries and taut, precise tannins. Wine Advocate calls it a gorgeous Gualtallary Malbec with dark fruit, purple flowers and a savory depth.
If you usually drink oak-aged Malbec, this shows the grape without wood: fresher, more mineral and more savory.
Serve it with grilled steak, lamb chops, chorizo or mushroom dishes.
