Bodegas El Nido was founded in Jumilla, in southeastern Spain, by the Australian winemaker Chris Ringland and the Gil family of Bodegas Juan Gil. El Nido is the estate's flagship, and Clío is its second wine.
The fruit is Cabernet Sauvignon plus very old, unirrigated Monastrell grown on limestone and gravel north of the town of Jumilla. El Nido is Cabernet-led, typically about 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Monastrell in recent vintages, though the exact 2020 split isn't published. Two retailers say the 2020 spent two years in new French and American oak.
What sets it apart is the makeup: a Cabernet-led wine from Jumilla, a region built on Monastrell, with old-vine fruit and long new-oak aging.
Against El Nido 2022, the 2020 has two more years in bottle and costs less; for an El Nido to open sooner, choose the 2020.
Decant it an hour or more ahead and serve it with grilled lamb, ribeye or aged Manchego.
