Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta Red Blend 2016 750ml

Clos Apalta is the flagship of Domaines Bournet-Lapostolle, the estate long sold as Casa Lapostolle, in the Apalta Valley of Colchagua, Chile. Charles de Bournet, 7th generation of the Bournet-Lapostolle family, leads the team, and Jacques Begarie is chief winemaker.

The 2016 is 64% Carmenère, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot from the El Condor vineyard, 48 hectares selected from a 160-hectare estate, with vines planted as far back as 1915, including old ungrafted vines. The estate is certified organic and biodynamic. It spent 24 months in 100% new French oak. The producer lists 14.5% alcohol.

The winery describes delicate cherry and black pepper, black cherry and blackberry, bell pepper and black olive from old-vine Cabernet, rounded Carmenère tannins and a fresh finish of smoke, cocoa, leather and tobacco.

Wine Spectator suggested drinking it through 2025, so it is mature now. Decant before serving.
