Red Schooner is a brand of the Wagner Family of Wine, the family behind Caymus in Napa Valley. Cask Cartel names Charlie Wagner as winemaker. The wine is sold by release number rather than vintage, and this is Transit No. 1.
Retailers report the grapes are grown in South Australia's Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, then shipped to Napa, where the wine is made in the Caymus style. The name comes from that sea transit. Transit No. 1 is mostly Shiraz with some Cabernet Sauvignon; percentages were not published. Wing Hop Fung says it was aged in French oak and first bottled in April 2018. It's 14.6% alcohol.
Wing Hop Fung describes a ripe style with deep color, robust tannins, a hint of mint and dried fruit. Cask Cartel notes black licorice, black fruit and oak.
Against Caymus Suisun Grand Durif, Transit No. 1 is the Shiraz-based bottle from Australian fruit; for a ripe, Aussie-style red from the Wagner family, choose Transit No. 1.
Pour it with grilled steak or ribs. Later releases have followed, numbered No. 2 and No. 3.
