Chateau Lilian Ladouys Saint-Estephe 2021 is a dry red Bordeaux from the Left Bank in France, a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. The estate is ranked Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, the top tier of the Cru Bourgeois classification.
The Lorenzetti family bought the chateau in 2008. Its vines grow on gravel over clay and limestone in Saint-Estephe, near Chateau Cos d'Estournel, and the 2021 was aged in oak barrels, 30% of them new.
Expect plum and redcurrant, white pepper, clove and dried herbs, with a medium body, fine, firm tannins and a fresh finish. James Suckling gives it 92 points, Vinous 91, Decanter 91 and Wine Advocate 89.
If you usually drink California Cabernet Sauvignon, this is the Bordeaux take on the grape: more savoury and less ripe, with fresher acidity and 13% alcohol.
It drinks well now and will keep for years. Serve it with steak, roast lamb or duck.
