Château Fleur La Mothe was founded in 2008 by three consultant oenologists, Edouard Massie, Henri Boyer and Antoine Médeville. Based in Saint-Yzans-de-Médoc, near the Gironde estuary, it was classified Cru Bourgeois Supérieur in 2020. It is HVE3 and Terra Vitis certified.
Its roughly 10 hectares are split into five parcels on gravel, clay-limestone and sandy-gravel soils. Wine Library quotes critic Lisa Perrotti-Brown giving the 2019 blend as 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot. It's 13% alcohol.
Critics describe it as perfumed, with cassis, blueberry, cedar and a stony note. James Suckling calls it very perfumed with fresh flowers and sweet berries, and Wine Advocate's William Kelley calls it a sleeper of the vintage with a broad drinking window.
Against Moulin de Duhart 2022, Fleur La Mothe is a Merlot-led Médoc at a third of the price; for an everyday claret with a few years of bottle age, choose Fleur La Mothe.
James Suckling suggests drinking it after 2023, so it's ready now. Serve with steak frites or lamb chops.
