Château Canon La Gaffelière is a Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé owned by the Comtes von Neipperg family, led by Stephan von Neipperg. Its 19.5 hectares of vines average 50 years old on clay-limestone soils, and the estate has been certified organic since the 2014 vintage.
The 2020 is 55% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, a high share of the Cabernets for the Right Bank. It was fermented in wooden vats with 32 days of maceration and aged 16 months on fine lees in 50% new barrels. The producer lists 13.5% alcohol.
The winemaker describes a delicate, complex bouquet with floral, spicy and fruity notes. Vinous calls it heady, sumptuous and totally exotic, and Jeb Dunnuck says it is quite possibly the finest vintage of this cuvée he has tasted.
Against Chateau Troplong Mondot 2014, Canon La Gaffelière is younger, organic and built on Cabernet Franc as much as Merlot; for an aromatic Saint-Émilion to cellar, choose Canon La Gaffelière.
One retailer advises decanting it while young. Serve with roast lamb or duck.
