Frontera Merlot 1.5L

Frontera is a Concha y Toro brand, part of the Chilean company's Varietal Wines range, and its Merlot sits in the Frontera Regular tier. Marcelo Gangas is the winemaker.

It's 100% Merlot from selected Central Valley grapes grown on alluvial and colluvial soils. About 40% of the fruit is picked by hand between late March and April, the Chilean harvest. The wine is aged for four months in stainless steel, and the producer mentions no oak. This is the 1.5L bottle, double a standard 750ml.

Concha y Toro describes a bright ruby wine with cherry and bell pepper and a subtle hint of cocoa, round and medium-bodied with a persistent finish.

Against Lindeman's Bin 40 Merlot 1.5L, Frontera costs a dollar less and is aged only in stainless steel; for a fresh, steel-aged Merlot by the big bottle, choose Frontera.

The producer pairs it with pasta, cheese, red meat and grilled chicken. Serve it slightly cool, and once opened, stopper it and finish it within a few days.
