Duckhorn Vineyards was founded in 1976 by Dan and Margaret Duckhorn. The winery calls itself a pioneer of luxury Merlot: its first Napa Valley Merlot came from the 1978 harvest, and its 2014 Three Palms Merlot was Wine Spectator's number one Wine of the Year in 2017.
This is the Napa Valley appellation blend, not a single-vineyard bottling. The 2022 is 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc, aged 15 months in French oak, 40% new and 60% neutral. It's 14.5% alcohol.
The winery describes floral notes and dark red berries on the nose, a supple, polished palate where fruit and tannin are well integrated, and a long, vibrant finish, with black cherry, plum and spice as its signature flavors.
Against Markham Napa Valley Merlot 2022, Duckhorn is the flagship Merlot from the house that pioneered luxury Napa Merlot; for a special dinner or a gift, choose Duckhorn.
Serve it with roast duck, lamb chops or pork tenderloin, and decant it for half an hour if you open it young.
