Disaronno contains no almonds. The company describes it as apricot-kernel oil, alcohol, burnt sugar and the essence of 17 herbs and fruits, and its site carries a nut-allergy-free badge. The Reina family began producing it in Saronno in the early 1900s, though the brand traces its story to 1525 and the painter Bernardino Luini. The US bottling is 28%.
It smells of marzipan and amaretti. The palate is rich and round, with apricot kernel, candied citrus and a bitter-almond edge.
For an Amaretto Sour or a Godfather, Disaronno is the default bottle. If you would rather taste real amaretti cookies, try Lazzaroni Amaretto, which is made by infusing them.
The producer's own serves are the Disaronno Sour and the Godfather, stirred with Scotch over ice. It is also good neat over a single cube.
Find a Scotch for the Godfather under liquor, and more Italian bottles under liqueurs and cordials. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery across NYC.
