Gaja Ca' Marcanda Camarcanda Bolgheri 2012 750ml

Ca' Marcanda is the Bolgheri estate of the Gaja family, the Barbaresco producer founded in 1859 and led by Angelo Gaja. It sits at Caccia al Piano, near Castagneto Carducci, and complements the family's holdings in Piedmont and Montalcino.

Camarcanda is labeled Bolgheri Rosso. Wine Advocate notes it could qualify as Superiore, but Gaja doesn't use the term. The 2012 is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The neighboring 2011 and 2013 were 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc, but the 2012 percentages and oak regime haven't been published.

Wine Advocate describes "a beautifully perfumed and delicate expression with an enormous sense of aromatic lift," while Wine Spectator found "a dark, brooding style" with black cherry, plum and spice.

Against Ornellaia 2016, Camarcanda is the older bottle at half the price; for a mature Bolgheri to open tonight, choose Camarcanda.

Wine Spectator suggested drinking it through 2023, so this 2012 is fully mature; open it soon. Serve it with bistecca or roast lamb.
