Merryvale is a St. Helena winery in Napa Valley run by the Schlatter family, with René and Laurence Schlatter named on its site. This Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir sits in the winery's Classics tier, separate from its winery-only Sun Chase and Durell bottlings.
The fruit comes from the Sonoma Coast AVA. One retailer reports that the 2023 was destemmed with a small portion of stems added, fermented with native yeast in stainless steel, and aged 10 months in about 40% new French oak. It's 14% alcohol.
The winemaker's notes describe dark cherry, tea and brambly fruit with juniper, red currant, cedar, lavender, clove and orange peel, over soft, velvety tannins. Decanter notes more elegance and red-fruited character than in the 2022.
Against Flowers Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 2023, Merryvale is the same appellation and vintage for less money; for a Sonoma Coast Pinot under $50, choose Merryvale.
Wine Advocate says it will benefit from some time in a decanter. Serve it with roast duck, salmon or mushroom dishes.
