Orin Swift Abstract Red Blend 2023 750ml

Abstract comes from Orin Swift Cellars, founded by Dave Phinney in St. Helena. E. & J. Gallo bought Orin Swift in June 2016, and Phinney stayed on to give creative and winemaking direction. A retailer says the swirling abstract label reflects his view that wine, like art, should provoke a response.

The 2023 is 49% Petite Sirah, 23% Syrah, 21% Grenache and 7% Zinfandel, from vineyards including Valley Oak, Barelli and Snow's Lake. It spent seven months in French oak, 30% new, and is sealed with a natural cork. Older releases were Grenache-led, so Petite Sirah taking the lead is a change.

The winery describes plum with "a hint of dark chocolate," and the UK importer's sheet adds black plum, blueberry, boysenberry, leather and Tahitian vanilla.

Against Orin Swift Eight Years in the Desert, Abstract costs less and leans on Petite Sirah; for a dark, plush blend for the grill, choose Abstract.

The importer suggests grilled or smoked rib eye, venison or braised short ribs. James Suckling says drink or hold.
