Pama Pomegranate Liqueur

PAMA is made from natural pomegranate juice, vodka and a touch of tequila, bottled at 17% by PAMA Spirits Co. in Bardstown, Kentucky, a Heaven Hill company.

It is deep red and tart first, sweet second: ripe berry and pomegranate on the nose, a sharp, mouth-puckering entry, and a clean finish. It is a liqueur to mix rather than sip: the acidity that makes it lively in a drink can feel sharp on its own.

That tartness is the reason to buy it. It gives a Cosmopolitan, a Margarita or a sparkling-wine cocktail real fruit acidity, which a sweeter fruit liqueur cannot. If you want a pomegranate note without making grenadine from scratch, this is the bottle.

Shake it with vodka and lime for a pomegranate martini, or top half an ounce with sparkling wine. It also brightens a punch bowl with rum and citrus.
