Sassicaia is the estate wine of Tenuta San Guido in Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast. It carries its own appellation, Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC, which is printed on the label.
The 2022 is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Cabernet Franc, and Vinous notes more Cabernet Sauvignon and less Franc than usual. Decanter reports shorter macerations and about 23 months in wood, rather than the more typical 24 or 25 months. It's 13.5% alcohol.
James Suckling calls it a structured wine for the cellar, and Wine Enthusiast describes it as a five-star luxury made with the ease of a lifetime of experience. Wine Spectator finds it closed and compact for now, but balanced, fresh and long, while Jeb Dunnuck says it needs several years to shed its baby fat.
Against Tenuta San Guido Le Difese, Sassicaia is the estate's Cabernet-based grand vin built for decades; for a bottle to lay down for a milestone, choose Sassicaia.
Decanter gives a drinking window of 2027 to 2052 and Wine Spectator 2028 to 2045. Decant it well ahead.
