Žuta Osa, Serbian for "yellow wasp", is the flagship slivovitz of Flores, a family distillery founded in 1985 by Radiša Pljakić in Divostin, near Kragujevac in central Serbia. It is a plum brandy bottled at 45%.
Slivovitz is the national spirit of Serbia, distilled from fermented plums. Žuta Osa is clean and fruity, with ripe plum and a warm, dry finish.
If you want a true Balkan plum brandy, this is the bottle to buy; for a French fruit brandy made from cherries, compare Willm Kirsch. For an apple brandy, try Menorval Calvados.
Serve it in a small glass at room temperature, the way it is drunk at Serbian celebrations, or slightly chilled before a meal.
Flores also makes an oak-aged Superior version; this is the standard bottling. More bottles are under brandy and cognac, and the rest of our liquor is a click away. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery across NYC.
