Angostura Aromatic Bitters were created in 1824 by Dr Johann Siegert, a surgeon in the town of Angostura, Venezuela, and have been made in Trinidad since 1875. The recipe is still secret, built on gentian and other herbs and spices, and the bitters are bottled at 44.7%.
A dash or two adds clove, cinnamon and warm spice, and rounds out a drink rather than making it taste bitter.
Every home bar needs a bottle; it is the bitters for an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan. For a New Orleans alternative, try Peychaud's; for a chocolate twist, see Angostura Cocoa Bitters.
Add two or three dashes to an Old Fashioned, a Manhattan or a Champagne Cocktail, or splash it into soda water and lime for a low-alcohol drink.
A 118ml bottle lasts a long time at a few dashes per drink. More bar staples are under mixers and bitters, and the rest of our liquor is a click away. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery across NYC.
