Antinori Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino 2020 750ml

Pian delle Vigne is the Antinori family's estate in Montalcino, a few kilometers south of the town on slopes above the Val d'Orcia.

The 2020 is 100% Sangiovese. One retailer reports that both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place in steel, followed by about two years in large oak casks. Brunello rules require release no earlier than five years after harvest, with at least two years in wood. It is 14% alcohol and sealed with a natural cork.

Retailers describe intense ruby with garnet tints, aromas of flowers, red berries, cocoa, pepper, coffee and tobacco, and a warm, spicy finish. Antinori's Swiss importer, Bindella, notes blackberry, clove, undergrowth and cocoa on a full, velvety palate.

Against Banfi Brunello di Montalcino 2020, Pian delle Vigne is the Antinori estate's single Brunello aged in large casks; for a 2020 Brunello to lay down for a special occasion, choose Pian delle Vigne.

Wine Spectator suggests it is best from 2027 through 2043, and James Suckling advises waiting three or four years. Decant it if you open it now.
