Fattoria dei Barbi is a historic Montalcino estate owned by the Cinelli Colombini family. Giovanni Colombini created Brusco dei Barbi with the 1969 vintage after studying old Tuscan fermentation methods built on long macerations.
The producer describes it as about 90% Sangiovese with other red grapes, from Montalcino vineyards on marl and clay at 400 meters, facing southwest, with vines around 15 years old. The grapes are destemmed and chilled to 16°C to draw out color, fermented for 10 to 12 days at 27 to 28°C and aged in stainless steel vats with no oak.
The winery describes a bright ruby wine with red berries, wild strawberry and subtle floral notes, supple, fresh and easy to drink.
Against Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello di Montalcino 2019, Brusco is the estate's unoaked, drink-young red at a fraction of the price; for weeknight pizza or pasta, choose Brusco.
Serve it at about 18°C, as the producer recommends, and drink it within three to five years. The winery suggests white meats, cured pork, spicy sauces, fresh cheeses and pizza.
