Alexandre Le Grand created Bénédictine in Fécamp, Normandy, in 1863, and it is still made there, at Le Palais Bénédictine. The recipe is a secret blend of 27 plants and spices, distilled several times and then blended, and it is bottled at 40%. D.O.M. on the label stands for Deo Optimo Maximo.
It is honeyed and herbal: pine, sage, fennel and licorice on the nose, then orange and tangerine zest, honey and baking spice on the palate.
For a ready-made mix of the liqueur with brandy, there is B&B. For cocktails, buy the D.O.M., since recipes like the Vieux Carré and the Bobby Burns call for it on its own.
Bénédictine's own cocktail list includes the Vieux Carré, the Bobby Burns and the Raffles Sling. On its own, sip it after dinner, neat or over one cube.
For another herbal classic, try Yellow Chartreuse, and find the rest under liqueurs and cordials. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery across NYC.
