Bodegas Juan Gil Silver Label Monastrell Jumilla 2023 750ml

Bodegas Juan Gil was founded in Jumilla, in southeastern Spain, in 1916. The Silver Label, also sold as 12 Meses, is its flagship Monastrell.

The 2023 is 100% Monastrell from vines more than 50 years old, grown around 700 meters on stony, very calcareous soils in a continental climate. It spends about a year in new and second-use French oak, and it's 14.5% alcohol.

Expect ripe currant, red berries and a wisp of smoke, a rich, powerful attack, a silky, juicy middle and a long, spicy finish with toast from the oak.

Against Vicente Gandía Ceramic, Juan Gil is fresher and more recent; for a powerful Spanish red at under $20, choose Juan Gil.

Open it 30 minutes ahead and serve it with grilled lamb chops, chorizo, barbecue or aged Manchego.
