Château de la Tour was established in 1890 and is the largest owner in the Clos de Vougeot, with about 5.5 hectares. It's run by François Labet.
Clos de Vougeot is a Grand Cru of the Côte de Nuits, and the estate bottles more than one cuvée from it: a Cuvée Classique, drawn from six parcels across the Clos, and a Vieilles Vignes from old vines. Stephen Tanzer reported that the 2016 Vieilles Vignes yielded just 18 hectoliters per hectare and was picked on 23 September, with no enzymes and no sulfur added until partway through aging.
Stephen Tanzer describes the 2016 Vieilles Vignes with dark berry, cherry, spice, mint and flowers, and Antonio Galloni found a real feeling of gravitas.
Against Patriarche Nuits-Saint-Georges 2015, this is a Grand Cru from the Côte de Nuits; for a milestone dinner, choose Château de la Tour.
Corney & Barrow suggests drinking the 2016 Vieilles Vignes from 2024 to 2034. Decant it an hour ahead and serve with roast duck or beef bourguignon.
