Château Lafite Rothschild is a First Growth of Pauillac, a Premier Grand Cru Classé, owned by the Rothschild family since 1868. The estate covers about 110 hectares.
The 2015 grand vin is 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Merlot, aged about 20 months in 100% new oak from the estate's own cooperage. Only 40% of the estate's production went into the grand vin, and it was bottled in early June 2017. It was the first vintage under winemaker Eric Kohler, who succeeded Charles Chevallier.
Critics describe a refined, restrained wine with its power held back. James Suckling finds elegance with power and a very classic nature, Wine Spectator calls it very refined and sneakily long, and Decanter notes that the power in this vintage is hidden.
Against Carruades de Lafite 2015, this is the estate's grand vin from the same vintage; for the First Growth itself, choose Lafite.
Decanter and Wine Spectator give a drinking window of 2025 to 2045. Decant it for a couple of hours and serve with roast lamb or prime rib.
