Château Pavie is a Saint-Émilion estate bought by Gérard and Chantal Perse in 1998 and restructured under their ownership. It was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé "A", the appellation's top tier, in 2012.
Its 42 hectares form a single block on three terroirs: a limestone plateau planted mostly to Merlot, a south-facing clay slope mostly to Cabernet Franc, and sand and gravel at the foot of the slope for Cabernet Sauvignon. Wine Advocate and Jeb Dunnuck report the 2015 blend as 60% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in 80% new French oak. The second wine is Arômes de Pavie.
One retailer's winemaker note calls the 2015 fresh, neat and well balanced. Wine Advocate praises its epic length, Wine Spectator calls it a contender for wine of the vintage on the Right Bank, and Wine Enthusiast says the fruit sings.
Against Carruades de Lafite 2015, Pavie is the richer, Merlot-led grand vin; for a Right Bank showpiece from the same vintage, choose Pavie.
Critics say it needs time. Decant it well ahead.
