Craggy Range is a family-owned winery held in a 1,000-year family trust. Ben Tombs is chief winemaker, and 2024 was his first vintage in charge as well as the winery's 25th harvest.
This is 100% Pinot Noir from Martinborough, in New Zealand's Wairarapa region. One UK retailer reports that the grapes were hand-sorted and fully destemmed, fermented with selected and indigenous yeasts in open-top steel tanks and French oak vats, then aged 8 months in French oak barriques, 21% new. It's 13.5% alcohol.
Decanter's judges found raspberry, cherry and plum, well-integrated oak and a long, broad palate, noting "Svelte tannins are barely palpable." The 2024 was named Best in Show at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2025, and Decanter counts it among only six New Zealand Pinot Noirs ever in the competition's Top 50.
Against Wairau River Marlborough Pinot Noir 2022, Craggy Range is the award-winning Martinborough bottle; for a special-occasion New Zealand Pinot Noir, choose Craggy Range.
The winery suggests serving its Pinot Noir at 14 to 16°C; decanting is optional.
