Drambuie is Scotch whisky sweetened with heather honey and spiced with herbs, bottled at 40%. The legend says Bonnie Prince Charlie gave the recipe to Clan MacKinnon on Skye in 1746. The paper trail starts in 1893, when James Ross registered the name, and commercial production in Edinburgh followed in 1909. William Grant & Sons has owned it since 2014.
Honey, heather and pine needle sit on top of salty single-malt notes. The palate is thick and gently sweet, with a strong herbal edge keeping it in balance.
For a Rusty Nail there is no substitute. If you want a honeyed herbal liqueur without the whisky, try Bénédictine instead.
Drambuie pours it over ice or in an iced espresso. For the Rusty Nail, stir it with a blended Scotch over a large cube and add a lemon twist.
