Frangelico is made in Canale, in Piedmont, where toasted hazelnuts are distilled with neutral alcohol and then infused with cacao, coffee, vanilla and other flavorings. It dates from 1978, Campari has owned it since 2010, and it is bottled at 20%.
It is golden and richly fragrant, with roasted hazelnut, marzipan and a little cocoa. It has enough weight to coat the palate without turning cloying, and the finish is long and sweet.
Disaronno is the almond liqueur; Frangelico is the hazelnut one. For a coffee drink or a nutty twist on an Espresso Martini, Frangelico is the better pick.
Frangelico's own serve is simple and good: over ice with a squeeze of fresh lime. It also goes into hot coffee, or into a martini with vodka and espresso.
More nut and coffee liqueurs are under liqueurs and cordials. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery across NYC.
