Gerstacker is a family-owned wine cellar and liqueur maker in Nuremberg, Germany, founded in 1945 and now run by the third generation.
Its Original Nürnberger Christkindles Markt-Glühwein carries the EU protected geographical indication for the mulled wine of the Nuremberg Christmas market, which requires it to be made in Nuremberg. The base is red wine, sweetened with glucose-fructose syrup and sugar and seasoned with natural flavoring, with about 8 grams of sugar per 100ml. The spice mix runs to cinnamon, clove, orange peel and vanilla.
It's the classic warming market drink: sweet, spiced red wine served hot in a mug.
Against ChocoVine Chocolate Wine, Gerstacker is a spiced red wine made to be heated; for a hot mug on a cold night, choose Gerstacker.
Warm it gently on the stove and don't let it boil, then pour it into mugs and add an orange slice if you like. It's made for holiday parties, tree trimming and winter evenings, with gingerbread, roasted nuts or bratwurst.
