Harlan Estate Napa Valley Red 2020 is a dry red Bordeaux-style blend from the western hills of Oakville in Napa Valley, California, led by Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot.
Harlan Estate was founded by Bill Harlan in 1984, with 1990 as its first vintage, and is one of Napa's most collected wines. The vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically; the grapes are sorted by hand, fermented in small lots in wooden fermenters and aged about two years in French oak, then bottled unfined and unfiltered.
You'll find chocolate-covered cherries, mulberry and crème de cassis with tar, violets, tilled soil and a hint of truffle. The palate is tightly wound and complex, with super-fine tannins and a long, mineral finish.
Vinous's Antonio Galloni calls it one of the best wines of a challenging vintage.
Decant for several hours if opening now, or cellar it for decades; serve with prime rib or roast lamb.
