Kooksoondang Peach Makgeolli comes from Kooksoondang, the South Korean brewery behind Baekseju, which exports its rice wines to more than 50 countries and counts the US as its main export market.
Makgeolli is a cloudy Korean rice wine. Per one retailer's ingredient list, this version is made from water, yeast, rice, citric acid, aspartame, koji, fructose, peach flavor and a touch of peach juice. Dan Murphy's says it uses peach extract and low-temperature pasteurisation. It is 3% alcohol, lightly fizzy.
Dan Murphy's describes a fragrant peach aroma and a clean, smooth, light palate with a slight fizz. Nikan Kitchen calls it sweeter than the original, with a strong peach note.
Against Kooksoondang Makgeolli, Peach is half the strength and noticeably sweeter; for a light aperitif or dessert pour, choose Peach.
Serve it chilled; Nikan Kitchen suggests 4 to 7°C and a gentle shake or tilt of the bottle to mix the sediment before pouring. It pairs with spicy Korean dishes and jeon.
