Kosta Browne is a Sonoma Pinot Noir house owned by Duckhorn. In Burgundy it works as a négociant, making wine at an established winery in the Côte de Beaune. Its first Burgundy vintage was 2020, and the wine is shipped to California for finishing and bottling.
This is a Beaune Premier Cru, a blend of unnamed premier cru climats rather than a single one. Frost and hail cut 2021 yields. Winemaker Julien Howsepian set the barrel regime: 13 months in French oak, 37% new, then three months in stainless steel. It's 13.5% alcohol.
The winery describes dominating notes of blackberry with white pepper, then cherry and orange with basil and dried oregano, and a rich, restrained finish.
Against Kosta Browne Cerise Vineyard Pinot Noir 2021, the Beaune is the Burgundy-grown bottle at a lower price; for Kosta Browne's take on Côte de Beaune fruit, choose the Beaune.
The winery suggests cellaring it for 2 to 10 years and storing it at 55 to 60°F. Serve with roast duck or mushrooms.
