Luli is a partnership between Master Sommelier Sara Floyd of Swirl Wine Brokers and the Pisoni family, with Mark Pisoni farming the vineyards and Jeff Pisoni making the wine. The winery produces about 15,000 cases a year across all its wines.
This is Luli's regional Santa Lucia Highlands blend, from sustainably farmed growers on well-drained, mainly granite soils. The winery says it uses native yeast and neutral French oak, and doesn't rack, fine or filter the wine. In 2022, decomposed granite soils stressed the vines and yields were low, according to the winemaker's notes. It's 14.1% alcohol.
The winemaker's notes describe Bing cherry, wild raspberry, cedar spice and violets, with juicy plum, muddled raspberry and layered tannins. Vinous calls it textbook SLH, an easygoing, early-drinking red.
Against Siduri Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir 2024, Luli is unfined, unfiltered and raised only in neutral oak; for a hands-off, Pisoni-made SLH Pinot, choose Luli.
Vinous suggests early drinking, so open it now. Serve it with roast chicken or salmon.
