Ridge Vineyards makes Three Valleys at its Lytton Springs and Monte Bello wineries from ten Sonoma County vineyards across Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma Valley and Russian River Valley.

The 2023 is 71% Zinfandel, 16% Carignane, 9% Petite Sirah and 2% each of Mataro and Alicante Bouschet, a field-blend style that's below the 75% needed to call it Zinfandel. It aged 12 months in air-dried American oak, only 19% of it new. It's 14.6% alcohol.

Ridge describes ruby color with blackberry and raspberry, then a medium-bodied palate with smooth tannins, plum fruit and a touch of vanilla on the finish.

Against The Prisoner, Three Valleys is fresher and less oaky, and costs less; for a Zinfandel-based blend with real balance, choose Ridge.

Ridge says it's enjoyable now and should develop for about five years. Pour it with burgers, barbecue chicken, pizza or lamb kebabs.
