Ron Zacapa 23 is a blend of rums between 6 and 23 years old, not a 23-year-old rum. It is distilled in Guatemala from the first press of sugarcane, which Zacapa calls virgin sugar cane honey, rather than molasses, then aged in a solera system at the House Above the Clouds, 2,300 meters up in the highlands, in casks that held American whiskey, sherry and Pedro Ximénez. The brand dates to 1976 and is bottled at 40%.
It is rich and smooth, with maple, dried fruit, cocoa, caramel, tobacco and a touch of oak.
Zacapa is the sweeter, more dessert-like sipper next to El Dorado 12, which is drier and costs less. If you like the solera style, also try Santa Teresa 1796.
Sip it neat or over one large ice cube, or stir it into an Old Fashioned. Zacapa also suggests a Zacapa Sour.
More aged rums for sipping are under rum. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery in Brooklyn, Manhattan & Queens.
