Sutter Home Winery in St. Helena, California, dates to 1890. It closed during Prohibition, and the Trinchero family reopened it in 1948.
This is the wine that created sweet White Zinfandel. In 1972 Bob Trinchero bled free-run juice off his Zinfandel to make a dry white Zinfandel. In 1974 a stuck fermentation left the wine pink with about 2% residual sugar, and that version was released in 1975. By 1987 it was the best-selling premium wine in the US. Today Sutter Home picks the Zinfandel early in the season, while acidity is still high, and cold-ferments the juice at 60°F for about ten days in stainless steel. The 750ml is 9.8% alcohol, with a screw cap.
The winery describes sweet, creamy strawberry and melon with a whisper of vanilla, light and refreshing, and calls it refreshingly sweet.
Against Yellow Tail Fresh Twist Strawberry & Lime Rosé, Sutter Home is the original grape-only sweet pink; for a classic White Zinfandel, choose Sutter Home.
Serve it well chilled. The winery suggests spicy dishes, salads, fish and meat. It comes in 187ml, 750ml and 1.5L sizes.
