Agave de Cortés Joven is a 100% espadín mezcal from Santiago Matatlán in Oaxaca, Mexico, bottled at 45% alcohol in a 750ml bottle.
It is made by the Cortés family, Zapotec mezcaleros in Matatlán since at least the 1840s and the family behind El Jolgorio, with maestro Francisco Javier Cortés Hernández. The espadín is roasted in an oak-fired earthen pit, crushed by a stone tahona, fermented in open-air wooden vats with wild yeast and distilled twice in copper pot stills. It is imported by Skurnik.
Skurnik describes subdued smoke with floral notes, lemongrass, damp earth and mineral clay on a rich, silky body. VinePair gives it 92 points for tropical fruit, citrus and berries with just enough smoke.
It is a serious family-made mezcal at a cocktail price.
