Del Maguey Vida is a joven (unaged) espadín mezcal from the village of San Luis del Río in Oaxaca, Mexico, bottled at 42% alcohol in a 750ml bottle. Del Maguey now calls it Vida Clásico.
Artist Ron Cooper founded Del Maguey in 1995 to bring mezcal from single family palenques to the US, naming each bottle after its village; Pernod Ricard became majority owner in 2017. Vida is made by palenquero Paciano Cruz Nolasco and his family. The espadín is roasted in an earthen pit, fermented naturally and distilled twice in wood-fired copper stills.
Del Maguey describes fruit, honey, vanilla and roasted agave on the nose, then ginger, cinnamon, sandalwood, banana and tangerine, with a long, soft finish.
It is Del Maguey's entry-level bottle, made to mix as well as to sip. For a smokier, celebrity-backed mezcal from the same village, compare Dos Hombres.
Use it in a mezcal margarita, paloma or Oaxaca old fashioned, or sip it with orange slices.
