Bols Genever Original 750ml

Genever is the Dutch spirit that came before gin, and Bols Genever follows a Lucas Bols recipe from 1820. More than half of it is malt wine, made from rye, corn and wheat and triple-distilled in copper pot stills, blended with a botanical distillate that includes juniper, hops and angelica.

It is not a gin. It tastes malty and rich, more like a light whisky with juniper: barley, raisin and cardamom over a full, dry body. It is bottled at 42%.

For classic 19th-century cocktails, this is the bottle to buy; for a London Dry gin, choose Tanqueray. For a Dutch gin, compare Nolet's Silver.

Try it in a Holland House or a Collins, or stir it like an Old Fashioned with a little sugar and bitters.
